What is a solar PV system?

It is a group of components that convert sunlight into electricity.

How does it work?

Solar cells are made from a semi-conductor (usually silicon) which creates an electrical charge when exposed to light. A number of cells are connected together to form a solar module, or solar panel. A number of modules connected together form a solar array. The array produces electricity which is then fed through an inverter to produce the type of electricity that we buy from the national grid. You can choose whether to store the power in batteries (an off-grid setup) or to remain connected to the national grid for your extra energy needs (this is called grid-tie).

Do I need batteries to store the power

If you are connected to the national grid (like almost every home) you will not need batteries. You can use the grid as a battery, selling your spare energy and buying it back when you need to. If you are not grid connected (in a remote location in the countryside) you can store the power in batteries - with NO STANDING CHARGE OR BILLS!

Is the climate in our country suitable for solar power?

Yes. Solar modules need light, not just direct sunlight. They are more efficient at lower temperatures so a bright winter's day is a good source of free energy.

Do I need planning permission?

Probably not. Most homes and businesses require only planning consent - this is a case of telling the local authority about the solar PV installation and then they send a letter saying 'ok'. If you live in a listed building, an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) or a conservation area then you may need permission. The government has issued Planning Policy Statement No. 22 - in a nutshell this advises local authorities to allow renewable energy installations wherever possible.

What is the lifespan of a solar array?

A long time! Most modules are designed to last over 25 years, and power output is guaranteed by the manufacturers over at least 20 years. We offer a 2 year workmanship warranty and the option of a maintenance arrangement to check on the cables and inverter once every few years.

What energy efficiency measures are needed?

Many businesses will already have these. They include low energy light bulbs, insulation, a controller for central heating and a room thermostat. If you would like to hear more about other energy efficiency actions, please ask one of our Sales Executives.

Do the panels still collect energy if they are dirty? Who cleans them?

Yes, the solar panels still harvest energy but are less efficient when covered with heavy amounts of dirt. The dirt or dust can be washed or hosed off when necessary. For your convenience, a servicing contract will be in place for ten years.

Warranty?

Panels have a 25 year warranty directly from the manufacturer and the inverter has a 10 year manufacturer warranty.

Who is liable if the solar module is stolen or vandalized?

Property insurance. Customer will need to deal with their property or business insurance.

Does the solar module have to be located at the meter or any convenient location?

Although it would be optimal if the module could be installed at the meter, we understand this is not always possible. Our system designers and engineers will determine the most advantageous location for your system.

What is Net Metering?

Net Metering is the regulatory ability to gain credit for the electricity you generate with your solar system and send backwards through your utility meter. Exact provisions vary with each state, but the effect is to allow you to generate excess power during the day, and use it at night, without needing batteries.
